Broomhall Celebrates it's 90th Anniversary

Founded in 1931, Broomhall Nursery School is Sheffield’s oldest nursery school and celebrates its 90th Anniversary this year.  The values of Broomhall Nursery School remain unchanged since its inception, namely providing quality early year’s education in a fun and loving environment. The standard of care and education offered at Broomhall is endorsed by three successive Ofsted inspections (2011/2012, 2014/2015 and 2018) in which the Nursery School was judged to be Outstanding in every area.

Whilst it is Sheffield’s oldest nursery school it is also, arguably, the most progressive with the staff team constantly seeking out innovative ideas to improve children’s learning and well-being.  In April 2021 Broomhall became the first setting in Sheffield to achieve accredited status for The Curiosity Approach.  The approach is all about harnessing children’s imaginations and their natural curiosity about the World around them to turn everyday items into things of wonder. There has been a move away from brightly coloured rooms, plastic resources and manufactured toys and a focus on a calm, nurturing and cosy environment which reflects the natural world.  Both indoors and outdoors in the nursery’s extensive walled gardens, children’s play is focused on the use of loose parts and open-ended resources such as pretty teapots, old typewriters, wicker baskets, curtain rings and wooden spoons to stimulate their imaginations and develop their problem solving and reasoning skills. The Curiosity Approach is interested in teaching children how to think, not what to think.

Since 2018, Broomhall Nursery has been designated by the local authority as a Centre of Excellence for children who have special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).

Occupying a large Victorian house set in beautiful gardens on the edge of the City Centre, the Nursery is just a few minutes’ walk from the universities, hospitals and the bustling Ecclesall Road.  Open Monday to Friday from 8am-5pm during term-time, Broomhall Nursery School offers flexible and high-quality nursery education to suit differing family circumstances.  Both 15 and 30-hour Free Early Learning places are available and Broomhall Nursery is currently accepting applications for September 2021.
